Floating shelves

A floating shelf seems to hang on the wall with no visible support: the bracket hides inside the wood or stays discreet underneath. Our floating shelves include 40 × 15 cm shelves in five finishes, a deep 42 × 16 cm paulownia shelf, a simple shelf in 29, 36 or 42 cm, a rustic shelf in walnut or natural wood, a no-drill version and a set of four small floating ledges.

Installing a floating shelf

Find the studs in a plasterboard wall and screw the bracket into them, or use fixings suited to brick or concrete. Between studs, use cavity anchors and keep the load light. Check with a spirit level before tightening, then slide the shelf onto the bracket.

Styling floating shelves

Stagger two shelves on a wall, or line them up in a row above a desk. Mix heights: a stack of books, a plant and a small vase. Leave some empty space so the shelf still looks light. More tips in our guide on how to hang a wall shelf.
